Lock 3 - St Catharines

A previous post dated 17 August 2014 mentioned the Miedwie had been at anchor in Port Weller for a couple of weeks. Port Weller - at anchor She anchored there 04 August 2014; her previous port was Hamilton. Today, after taking on a pilot, she lifted anchor and entered the Welland Canal heading upbound for Thunder Bay. According to an article in the St Catharines Standard there are a number of reasons why a boat can be anchored for longer than normal times. St Catharines Standard: Stationary Lake Ontario ships explained Whatever the reason, a month is a long time to be anchored just offshore.

The canal has been very busy today and while waiting for the Miedwie to clear Lock 3 heading toward the Glendale Ave Bridge (Bridge 5) everything seemed to stop. The Algoma Havester was waiting to enter Lock 3 up against the south wall heading downbound and the Miedwie was heading out of Lock 3 when she stopped part way out of the lock. Was her angle off, and her line of exit was too close to the Havester? Whatever the reason, after a bit of time, she backed up into the lock again and then made a clean exit out into the canal and past the Harvester.

This was a very interesting time at the canal...Miedwie and Algoma Havester were on the south side of Lock 3...the Twin Flight Locks had Federal Hunter in Lock 4 West, above her was Algoma Spirit in Lock 6 West, and downbound in Lock 6 East was Algoway. On the north side of Lock 3 waiting to enter the lock was the Algoma Olympic.

Miedwie stopped while leaving Lock 3. Algoma Havester waiting South Wall Lock 3.
Both boats still stopped...Algoma Harvester tight against the wall.
On the other side of Glendale Bridge are the Twin Flight Locks...in Lock 4 West is Federal Hunter...above her in Lock 6 West is Algoma Spirit. The East Locks (downbound) are empty.
Now the Algoway has entered Lock 6 East while the other two boats are still in their locks.
Miedwie, part way out of Lock 3 and stopped.
